A Zero Trust Architecture for Automotive Networks

Since the early 1990’s, commercial vehicles have suffered from repeated vulnerability exploitations that resulted in a need for improved automotive cybersecurity. This paper outlines the strategies and challenges of implementing an automotive Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) to secure intra-vehicle networks. Zero Trust (ZT) originated as an Information Technology (IT) principle of “never trust, always verify”; it is the concept that a network must never assume assets can be trusted regardless of their ownership or network location. This research focused on drastically improving security of the cyber-physical vehicle network, with minimal performance impact measured as timing, bandwidth, and processing power. The automotive ZTA was tested using a software-in-the-loop vehicle simulation paired with resource constrained hardware that closely emulated a production vehicle network.

Planning for the Application of ARP4754A for New and Modified Aircraft Projects with New, Simple, and Reused Systems

Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) 4754 Revision A (ARP4754A), “Guidelines for Development of Civil Aircraft and Systems,” [1] is recognized through Advisory Circular (AC) 20-174 (AC 20-174) [2] as a way (but not the only way) to provide development assurance for aircraft and systems to minimize the possibility of development errors. ARP4754A and its companion, Aerospace Information Report (AIR) 6110, “Contiguous Aircraft/System Development Process Example,” [3] primarily describe development processes for an all new, complex and highly integrated aircraft without strong consideration for reused systems or simple systems. While ARP4754A section 5 mentions reuse, similarity, and complexity, and section 6 is intended to cover modification programs, the descriptions in these sections can be unclear and inconsistent. The majority of aircraft projects are not completely new Products nor are they entirely comprised of complex and highly integrated systems.

Performance Analysis of Fuel Cells for High Altitude Long Flight Multi-rotor Drones

In recent years, the burgeoning applications of hydrogen fuel cells have ignited a growing trend in their integration within the transportation sector, with a particular focus on their potential use in multi-rotor drones. The heightened mass-based energy density of fuel cells positions them as promising alternatives to current lithium battery-powered drones, especially as the demand for extended flight durations increases. This article undertakes a comprehensive exploration, comparing the performance of lithium batteries against air-cooled fuel cells, specifically within the context of multi-rotor drones with a 3.5kW power requirement. The study reveals that, for the specified power demand, air-cooled fuel cells outperform lithium batteries, establishing them as a more efficient solution.

Automated TARA Framework for Cybersecurity Compliance of Heavy Duty Vehicles

Recent advancements towards autonomous heavy-duty vehicles are directly associated with increased interconnectivity and software driven features. Consequently, rise of this technological trend is bringing forth safety and cybersecurity challenges in form of new threats, hazards and vulnerabilities. As per the recent UN vehicle regulation 155, several risk-based security models and assessment frameworks have been proposed to counter the growing cybersecurity issues, however, the high budgetary cost to develop the tool and train personnel along with high risk of leakage of trade secrets, hinders the automotive manufacturers from adapting these third party solutions. This paper proposes an automated Threat Assessment & Risk Analysis (TARA) framework aligned with the standard requirements, offering an easy to use and fully customizable framework. The proposed framework is tailored specifically for heavy-duty vehicular networks and it demonstrates its effectiveness on a case study.

Wire Braid Angle Response Characteristics in Hydraulic Hose

This report is concerned with the effects of braid angle on the behavior of hydraulic hose. For equilibrium conditions to exist, and if the braid layers are assumed to bear tension forces only, the angle of the reinforcement layers must be along that of the total force exerted by the internal pressure. This is the neutral angle θN, which has a theoretical value of 54.74° (54°44′). It is possible to hypothesize a fretting wear model in which wires move on top of one another inside a braid layer if the braid angle is different from this theoretical neutral angle. Even though theoretical claims are made by some technical professionals, the hydraulic hose industry has been successfully making hoses with non-neutral braid angles for years. Testing and application have shown that fretting wear is not a principal cause of hose failure and fatigue.

On the Effects of Urea and Water Injection on Particles across the SCR Catalyst in a Heavy - Duty Euro VI Diesel Engine

Particle emissions from heavy-duty engines are regulated both by mass and number by Euro VI regulation. Understanding the evolution of particle size and number from the exhaust valve to the tail pipe is of vital importance to expand the possibilities of particle reduction. In this study, experiments were carried out on a heavy-duty Euro VI engine after-treatment system consisting of diesel oxidation catalyst, diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit with AdBlue injection followed by ammonia slip catalyst. The present work focusses on the SCR unit with regard to total particle number with and without nucleation particles both. Experiments were conducted by varying the AdBlue injection quantity, SCR inlet temperature [to vary the reaction temperature], exhaust mass flow rate [to vary the residence time in SCR], and fuel injection pressures [to vary inlet particle number and inlet NOx].

Comparison of Rear Impact Crash Reconstructions to Event Data Recorders in the Crash Investigation Sampling System Database

This article compares the results of automotive accident reconstructions to event data recorder (EDR) data from vehicles involved in rear-end collisions. Accident reconstructions in the Crash Investigation Sampling System (CISS) database calculate crash severity expressed as the impact-related change in velocity (delta-V) experienced by a vehicle. The accuracy of the CISS-reconstructed delta-V in rear impacts was assessed by comparison to the delta-V recorded during the crash by the EDR on board the rear-ended vehicles. The CISS database was searched for single rear impact cases with a CISS-reconstructed delta-V as well as an EDR download. A total of 256 cases met these criteria. On average, the CISS-reconstructed delta-V was 4.0% lower than the delta-V recorded by the EDR. The accuracy of the CISS reconstructions varied with crash configuration, vehicle type, collision partner, and crash severity.

This paper will present the scope of an NASA program aimed at improving the design and evaluation techniques relative to stall/spin characteristics of general-aviation aircraft. The program encompasses analytical studies, full-scale and model wind-tunnel tests, radio-control model, and full-scale flight tests. Initial spin-tunnel results of several tail designs on a representative light airplane will be discussed.

Effect of Viscosity Index Improvers in Ethanol/Gasoline/Water Emulsions Formed with E25 and E85 in Passenger Car Motor Oils

Concern about the consequences of fuel dilution on engine oil properties are intensifying due to the increasing use of E25 and E85 fuel in passenger cars. Notably, such concerns are about the effect of emulsion formation and stability in crankcase oils by E25 or E85 fuel and water dilution on vehicle operation at cold-start conditions. Different types of Viscosity Index Improver (VII) chemistries were evaluated for their effects on emulsion formation and engine oil characteristics. Emulsions were prepared with fresh and used passenger car motor oils using the ASTM D7563 method for emulsion retention. The emulsion properties were evaluated after storage for 24 hours at two different temperatures. Separate oil/gasoline and emulsion (ethanol/water/oil) phases were observed for fresh oil emulsions. None of the emulsions exhibited a separate water phase, regardless of the type of VII in the oil.

Examination of Detroit AssuranceⓇ 4.0 Video Radar Decision Unit (VRDU) Records for Use in Crash Analysis

The Daimler Detroit AssuranceⓇ 4.0 collision mitigation system is able to assist a driver in various aspects of safely operating their vehicle. One capability is the Active Brake Assist (ABA), which uses the Video Radar Decision Unit (VRDU) to communicate with the front bumper-mounted radar to provide information about potential hazards to the driver. The VRDU may warn the driver of potential hazards and apply partial or full braking, depending on the data being gathered and analyzed. The VRDU also records event data when an ABA event occurs. This data may be extracted from the VRDU using Detroit DiagnosticLink software. This paper presents an overview of the VRDU functionality and examines aspects of VRDU data such as the range and resolution of data elements, the synchronicity or timing of the recorded data, and application of the data for use in the analysis of crashes.

Examination of Bendix® Data Recording (BDR) Records for Use in Crash Analysis

Electronic control units of Bendix® ABS/ESC and Collision Mitigation Systems have the capability to record event data in the ABS/ESC control unit. Bendix refers to this event data recording functionality as the Bendix Data Recorder (BDR). This paper presents an overview of the BDR functionality and examines the range and resolution of data elements, the synchronicity or timing of the recorded data, and application of the data for use in analyzing crashes. Various tests were performed using trucks equipped with Bendix® Wingman® Fusion™ and were conducted in a manner to trigger BDR records. BDR data was compared to data collected from the J1939 CAN Bus and from Racelogic VBOX data loggers.

Testing of Heavy Truck Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and Crash Mitigation Systems

Modern heavy vehicles may be equipped with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) designed to increase highway safety. Depending on the vehicle or manufacturer, these systems may detect objects in a driver’s blind spot, provide an alert when the ADAS determines that the vehicle is leaving its lane of travel without the use of a turn signal, or notify the driver when certain road signs are detected. ADASs also include adaptive cruise control, which adjusts the vehicle’s set cruise speed to maintain a safe following distance when a slower vehicle is detected ahead of the truck. In addition, the ADAS may have a Collision Mitigation System (CMS) component that is designed to help drivers respond to roadway situations and reduce the severity of crashes. CMSs typically use radar or a combination of radar and optical technologies to detect objects such as vehicles or pedestrians in the vehicle’s path.

Metrics based design of electromechanical coupled reduced order model of an electric powertrain for NVH assessment

Electric vehicles offer cleaner transportation with lower emissions, thus their increased popularity. Although, electric powertrains contribute to quieter vehicles, the shift from internal combustion engines to electric powertrains presents new Noise, Vibration, and Harshness challenges. Unlike traditional engines, electric powertrains produce distinctive tonal noise, notably from motor whistles and gear whine. These tonal components have frequency content, sometimes above 10 kHz. Furthermore, the housing of the powertrain is the interface between the excitation from the driveline via the bearings and the radiated noise (NVH). Acoustic features of the radiated noise can be predicted by utilising the transmitted forces from the bearings. Due to tonal components at higher frequencies and dense modal content, full flexible multibody dynamics simulations are computationally expensive.

A Low-Cost System for Road Induced Tire Cavity Noise Control (RTNC)

The transition from ICE to electric power trains in new vehicles along with the application of advanced active and passive noise reduction solutions has intensified the perception of noise sources not directly linked to the propulsion system. This includes road noise as amplified by the tire cavity resonance. This resonance mainly depends on tire geometry, air temperature inside the tire and vehicle speed and is increasingly audible for larger wheels and heavier vehicles, as they are typical for current electrical SUV designs. Active technologies can be applied to significantly reduce narrow band tire cavity noise with low costs and minimal weight increase. Like ANC systems for ICE powertrains, they make use of the audio system in the vehicle. In this paper, a novel low-cost system for road induced tire cavity noise control (RTNC) is presented that reduces the tire cavity resonance noise inside a car cabin.
